How to Weave a Picture
A woven picture is a simple craft for young children. The end result can make a lovely gift. And this is also a great way to teach children about how to recycle items around the house, especially those fruit bags that are often around oranges and the like.
Assemble the things needed for this project. They're listed below under "Things You'll Need". Set up a comfortable workspace and be prepared to oversee the craft.
Cut out a cardboard piece to serve as the frame.Make it rectangular or square in shape.
- Do this for each child making a picture. The children should not be cutting anything themselves.
Cut the fruit mesh bag into the shape of the frame.Cut it larger than the frame as it needs to be taped onto the back. Using masking tape or similar tape, stick the mesh down on the back of the frame so that it covers the front. It should sit flat and straight.
Place the craft box of decorating items in the middle of the workspace.Provide each child with the mesh frame. Tell them to make a picture of their own choosing by weaving the pieces in the craft box through and onto the mesh.
- For older children, encourage the creation of a coherent scene, such as a beach or a farm.
Have each child write their name and the date on the back and assist those who cannot do this yet.Place their wonderful creation on display or help them to wrap it if they're giving it as a gift.
- If the weaving is a little loose, help the child and fix it more firmly. Use glue to hold larger items in place if needed, especially if the picture is going to be hung.
