How to Write a Tetactrys Poem

Three Parts:

A tetractys poem is a poetic form that has at least five lines. The poem uses a specific syllable pattern to create a pleasing visual form on the page. Writing a tetractys poem can be a fun, challenging exercise for seasoned poets or poets new to the genre. Start by brainstorming ideas for the poem. Then, create a draft using the syllable pattern for the poem. Polish the poem once you have a draft so it is at its best.

Steps

Brainstorming Ideas for the Poem

  1. Focus on a particular emotion.Tetractys poems work best if you focus one specific thing, such as an emotion. Pick a strong emotion like anger, rage, sadness, or despair. Write about what comes to mind for you when you think of the emotion.
    • You may focus on a particular event or experience that caused you to feel the emotion. Or you may describe the emotion using sensory details like smell, sound, taste, touch, and sight.
  2. Write about a person or object.Focus on an important person in your life, such as a family member or a best friend. Pick an object that you have sentimental attachment to, like your first toy or your childhood home. The person or object should feel important enough to you to write about in a poem.
    • For example, you may write a poem that focuses on your relationship with your sister. Or you may write about an object like your first award at school.
  3. Choose a memorable experience or moment. You can also write about an experience or moment that felt powerful, unsettling, or important to you. Write about your first experience with love or lust. Pick a moment where you felt lost or confused.
    • Try to choose just one experience or moment to write about. Focusing on one experience or moment will make the poem more detailed and engaging for the reader.
  4. Read examples of a tetractys poem.To get a better sense of the form, read examples online or in poetry anthologies at the library. You can also look at writing blogs and online magazines for examples of tetractys poems.
    • There are examples of tetractys poems on and .

Creating a Draft of the Poem

  1. Follow the syllable pattern of a tetractys poem. The poem will have at least five lines. Each line with increase one syllable, except for the last line, which has 10 syllables. The pattern for a tetractys poem is:
    • Line 1: 1 syllable
    • Line 2: 2 syllables
    • Line 3: 3 syllables
    • Line 4: 4 syllables
    • Line 5: 10 syllables
  2. Build one line on top of another. The poem should flow from one line another like one long sentence. The first line should connect to the second line, and so on. Try breaking up one sentence into each line, following the syllable count. The last line should have a period at the end. For example:
    • Line 1: Soon
    • Line 2: I will
    • Line 3: See her pass
    • Line 4: By the new moon
  3. Create more than one stanza in the poem.If you’d like to have more than one stanza in the poem, you can write a double tetractys poem. The second stanza will invert the syllable pattern, starting with line 6, which will have 10 syllables, followed by line 7, with 4 syllables, line 8 with 3 syllables, line 9 with 2 syllables, and line 10 with 1 syllable. For example:
    • Line 1: Soon
    • Line 2: I will
    • Line 3: See her pass
    • Line 4: By the new moon
    • Line 5: To ask how I found her in the bright dark.
    • Line 6: Her shadow covers me, I close my eyes.
    • Line 7: She casts a spell
    • Line 8: Of no sleep
    • Line 9: Just her
    • Line 10: Soon

Polishing the Poem

  1. Read the poem out loud.Once you have a draft of the tetractys poem, read it aloud to yourself and listen to how it sounds. Check that the poem follows the right line and syllable requirements. Notice any lines that sound awkward or unclear and underline them so you can revise them later.
  2. Show the poem to others.Ask friends, family, and peers to read the tetractys poem and give you feedback. Pose questions about the content, flow, and language in the poem. Be open to constructive criticism, as this will make the poem stronger.
    • If you are part of a poetry group, you can also show the poem to the group for feedback.
  3. Title the poem.It may be easiest to title the poem at the very end, once you have a finalized draft. Pick a title that describes the poem and engages the reader. Do not make the title too long or vague. Often, a specific title works best.
