Is Rabbit Meat Good for You?
In today’s animal rights news, people across the nation are protesting Whole Foods, because the chain recently decided to sell rabbit meat—yes, rabbit meat—at select locations across the country. Perhaps not surprisingly, the protestors and advocacy groups, such as The House Rabbit Society, are saying that rabbit is more of a pet than a meal, and selling the furry creature as food is inhumane.
In response to the backlash, a Whole Foods spokesman released a statement explaining that the company is “sensitive to the companion animal issue,” and that their decision to sell rabbit was based on a high number of customer requests, according to a Foodbeast article. Whole Foods also clarified that the rabbits they sellmusthave had “continuous access to water, feed, roughage and knowing blocks.” (Nope, we're not sure what knowing blocks are, either.)
Animal rights issues aside, the other elephant-in-the-room question is this: Is rabbit meat evengoodfor you? “I wouldn’t recommend it myself, personally, but nutritionally speaking, yes, it’s actually a very good choice,” explains Lisa Young, Ph.D., R.D., author ofThe Portion Teller Plan. According to the USDA, three and a half ounces of rabbit comes in at 173 calories. That’s just a little less than three a half ounces of white chicken meat, which is 201 calories—and alotless than beef, which is about 295 calories for the same serving size. “It’s also considerably lower in fat and saturated fat than beef,” says Young. There are about four grams of fat in three ounces of rabbit, compared to about 22 grams of fat in a beef patty.
So there you have it.
